The Coming Revolution in NATO Maritime Command and Control

Since the turn of the decade NATO has made major improvements in the architecture supporting maritime command and control (C2). As late as the early 1990s, shore-based NATO commanders exercized command and control over their operating forces at sea more or less as had been done during World War II: via paper signals, grease-pencil status boards, metal-backed map boards, and magnetic pucks—repre...

Autonomous System for Air Traffic Control in Terminal Airspace

In this article we present recent work towards the development of an autonomous system that performs conflict resolution and arrival scheduling for aircraft in the terminal airspace around an airport. An autonomous air traffic control system is defined as a system that can safely solve the major traffic management problems currently handled by human controllers. It has the potential to handle h...

Airspace configuration using air traffic complexity metrics

Flow regulation is a critical process in air traffic management, ensuring that the incoming traffic does not exceed the ability of air traffic controllers to handle it safely and efficiently. Currently, the european Flow Management Positions (FMP) use flight counts and sector capacities to assess the traffic load and build predicted opening schemes. These schemes, made of predefined airspace co...
